App blocking and Google TV profiles

Short answer: App Blocking works in the TV's main profile. If your child watches in another Google TV profile, such as a Kids profile, a blocked app can still open there. Lock, schedules and the timer cover every profile. To choose the apps in a Kids profile, use Manage apps in the TV's settings.

Updated

A Google TV can have more than one profile, for example a Kids profile for your child. Each profile has its own home screen. Profiles are a Google TV feature. If your TV runs plain Android TV, this page doesn’t apply.

What works in every profile

  • Lock. When you lock the TV, the lock screen covers it, whichever profile is open.
  • Schedules. Outside the unlock hours, the TV locks the same way.
  • Screen time timer. When the time runs out, the TV locks or goes to sleep, in any profile.

What works in the main profile only

App Blocking works in the TV’s main profile. If your child opens an app in another profile, TVCP doesn’t see it, so an app you blocked opens there. Turning on Advanced Protection doesn’t change this.

What you can do

  • Hide the app in the Kids profile. Google TV lets you choose which apps a Kids profile has. The steps are below.
  • Have your child watch in the main profile. App Blocking works there.
  • Use Lock, a schedule or a timer for the times your child shouldn’t watch. They work in every profile.

Choose the apps in a Kids profile

  1. On the Google TV home screen, select All settings, then Accounts & Profiles.
  2. Select your child’s profile.
  3. Enter your Google Account PIN or password.
  4. Select Manage apps.
  5. Uncheck the blue box next to each app you want to hide, for example YouTube. A checked box means the app is allowed in that profile.

The menu names can differ a little between TV models. Kids profiles aren’t available in every country or on every device.
